The Medieval Cities of Arezzo and Cortona
The Basilica di San Francesco boasts The Legend of the Cross by Piero della Francesca, a Renaissance masterpiece. The Duomo, Roman Theater and Piazza Grande, with its long Loggia, are just a few of the sites worth visiting. In the afternoon, you will continue onto Cortona, which is set among terraced slopes that are covered with olives and vines and has a network of winding streets that climb up to the old fortress. First it was a main Etruscan town, and then it became a medieval commune until it was annexed to the Florentine grand duchy. The city center is a maze of narrow streets that open to superb medieval squares, like Piazza della Repubblica, and is full of many interesting medieval churches.
Pienza and Montepulciano
This tour will start from Pienza, a small town near Siena, often dubbed as “the ideal city”. Pienza, an unusually fine example of Renaissance town planning, was conceived as a model for urban life and government, specifically designed to protect a peaceful, civic-minded, hard-working population.
The untouched surroundings of the Val d’Orcia provided the perfect setting for humanistic ideals dipped in the harmony of man and nature. We will visit the Duomo in Pio II square and the Palazzo Piccolomini. Next, we will visit Montepulciano, where you will discover a lost-in-time medieval village, perched on a limestone ridge at 605 meters above sea level. Walls and fortifications designed in 1511 for Cosimo I contain a net of charming streets punctuated with Renaissance buildings. Wine lovers will also love the local “Vino Nobile”, for which the town is well-known.
